AFC Hornchurch Res (0) 0 Report by Paul Lamper Arranged at short notice this Capital League match proved to be of the more benefit to the visitors as Enfield Town ran out comfortable winners. A mixture of squad players and new faces set about AFC Hornchurch from the start and were well worth their single goal advantage at half time. Ryan Hughes' fifteenth minute cross was headed home by Luke David as Town reaped the benefit of controlling the opening exchanges. A blend of football that was both pleasing on the eye and, more importantly pleasing to the watching first team management trio was almost undone by two chances conceded to home forward Tobi Amokedo. Finding himself in front of Jason Willis on both occasions after robbing the home defence of possession Amokeodo found the Town custodian equal to his efforts the later chance seeing Willis pull off a double save first with his hands and then right foot to keep the Town goal intact. In truth the second period was one way traffic as Town turned the screw. David completed a hat trick within seven minutes of the restart tapping home two goals from close range, collecting Ryan Hughes' cross and converting stylishly for the third. Clyde George added a fourth with hooked effort with a quarter of the match remaining and Hughes deservedly got a reward of a goal and Town's fifth of the evening turning on Billy Healey's cross and converting from close range. The final entertainment for Town fans was the introduction of Gary Brooker for the last ten minutes, the assistant to first team manager Stewart Margolis had a sniff of a chance to add a final goal but only managed to spoon his effort to a team mate. Enfield Town U18s (0) 3 Mogan, Packenham, Healey Report by Ryan Warren Enfield Town's under 18s set out against Hoddesdon Town in the Eastern Junior Alliance league to stretch their run to five straight wins since Billy Byford stepped up to jointly manage the side with Mike Smee. Town's recent wins against Boca Mountnessing, Stevenage Borough, Enfield Town and Ilford had filled the side with confidence and belief that the league is well within their reach. The game began and in the first minute debutant Harry Fromet found himself through on goal and forced a fine save from the Hoddesdon keeper to deny his shot. Town sustained this and were the dominant team until a Hoddesdon player crossed a high looping ball into the box which was acrobatically volleyed into the roof of the net to make the score 1-0 to Hoddesdon. This goal was surely against the run of play but was made even worse when a set piece inside the Enfield Town half found a Hoddesdon player who forced his header beyond the helpless Jason Holmes in goal. The half continued to look dull for Town who were positively shook by these two goals in quick succession and were looking lack-lustre to say the least and with Alex Cattini being forced off the pitch due to injury things were looking down. Despite not playing well or looking like the team that they are, Town managed to create a couple of chances for themselves, a quick passing move including Kieron Sauboorah and Joe Packenham ended with Billy Healey being one on one with the Hoddesdon Town keeper who again pulled out a top drawer save to keep his side ahead. And just before the end of the half Harry Fromet, almost identically to the first minute, was slipped in on goal with no defenders close, only to be controversially brought back for offside. A feisty half time for Enfield resulted in all players being rattled beyond belief, with the knowledge that if they did not win this match then the league would surely be out of their reach. Town immediately set out, pushing Hoddesdon onto the back foot and pressurising the opponents goal at every opportunity. A ball was played up the pitch by Tom Riley to the in-form Joe Packenham who was shoved in the back leaving Enfield with a free kick. This free kick was placed in an inviting area, which with Dean Mogan on the pitch, a player whose season has been blighted with injury so far was an unforgiveable mistake. Mogan stood over the ball, and with a short run up blasted what seemed like a season's worth aggression all pumped into one kick of the ball, this kick flew straight into the top corner leaving the Hoddesdon goalkeeper standing and the score at 2-1. With only one goal in it Enfield knew that they were well and truly in the game and if they kept playing the same way that there would be no stopping them. The second half continued and Enfield were playing like their lives depended on it, every tackle being contested and every header being won, the Hoddesdon team were simply running in circles trying to find where the ball was. But Enfield's position was worsened again when both Dean Mogan and Kieron Sauboorah were forced off due to injury, despite this Towns rhythm was not altered and Gordon Wallis came close with a left footed long range strike that was deflected into the keepers path. All this happened with barely 10 minutes of the second half gone, so Town still had all the time in the world to get back into the game and Joe Packenham made sure of this after Billy Healey flicked the ball incredibly over his marker's head, into the path of Packenham who made no mistake in racing from the half way line and placing the ball past the oncoming goalkeeper. At 2-2 with plenty of time to spare Town knew that it was now down to them whether they would win this tie or not and decided not to relax but continue to run the tough Hoddesdon side ragged and not let up at all. This assertion showed by the Enfield side was paid off when Billy Healey sprinted 20 yards to take a quick throw in back to Ryan Warren, who simply gave the ball back to Healey to cross dangerously into the Hoddesdon penalty area, the cross was cleared, but only as far as Harry Fromet whose volley rocketed off a defender into Billy Healey's path, who by now had sprinted into the six yard box and finished into the bottom corner to complete Enfield's comeback and leave a deflated Hoddesdon side standing. The final score of 3-2 showed Enfield's huge title race credentials and by coming back from two goals down to win in such style displays to their contenders that if they want the league they're going to have to fight till the very end to get it. |
