Harlow Town vs Enfield Town
Ryman League Division One North

Tomorrow we head into a new year and travel to Harlow in the league. Kick off will be 3.00pm. I suppose after the last few weeks I should add, "weather permittng" but I have seen nothing to suggest that there needs to be a pitch inspection and I think we can all be quietly confident the game will go ahead.

Hopefully we can follow up our stunning 5-0 win earlier in the season but both sides have had changes in personnel since that game and, anyway, we can't be sure that everything will go right for us again like it did in August.

Enfield Town FC's second ever match was a home game against Cheshunt in a pre season fixture at the Downs. Jim Chandler was still trying out his new players and we lost 0-2. 223 turned up to watch though.

The following season (02-03) another pre season game was arranged at 48 hours notice and Jim took an 'experimental' side to Cheshunt and game home with a 0-3 defeat. Such was the side that Chopper played up front in the second half.

It was off to the Country Club for our next game in pre-season 2003 and we came back on the wrong end of a 4-1 defeat. At least we scored – Matthew Negus getting our goal.

In pre season 2005-06 another friendly and a draw in one of the most entertaining friendlies you are likely to see. We were a goal down at half time and Jim sent on a completely different side in the second half Maurice Byfield scored our equalisor before Jon Stevenson netted an og to give Cheshunt the lead. He made amends 2 minuted from the end, however, whacking in our second from the spot and making it 2-2.

Our first competitive game against Cheshunt took place at Brimmo in September 2008 and was a thriller. We had just won at Tilbury but were still not able to win a home game and the trend continued in this one! Still, as Martin put it – we keep coming up with more inventive ways to lose 'em! A goal up after 63 seconds through Mitch Hahn the Ambers equalised after half an hour. Hahn again gave us the lead only for Cheshunt to come back again. A draw probably would have been the right result but a howler from our keeper presented them with a third. 249 were there. The return game was in March 2009 and we came away from Theobalds Lane with all three points in a hard fought game. It was our first win against Cheshunt at the sixth time of asking. Chris Wild was unlucky not to open the scoring when his header was cleared off the line. Sammy Winston got the only goal of the game after 83 minutes, looping his shot over Cheshunt's former Town 'keeper, Ashley Harris. 295 were there.

The curse of the "Manager of the Month" failed to strike in January 2010 as Town ran in four unanswered goals at Goldsdown Road. Jordan Lockie opened the scoring with a thunderbolt of a shot before Mark Kirby doubled the lead before half time. Sam Byfield finished off a sublime move for the third before Liam Hope rounded things off as Town scored four for the fourth consecutive league game. It could have been a far wider margin as Hope also hit the bar, several good chances were squandered and visiting 'keeper Luke Dodd pulled off one very good save. Rob Blackburne, at the other end, may not have had much to do but his positioning was impeccable throughout and what he did have to do he did well. 246 were there to see us retain our play off spot. We travelled to Cheshunt on the back of a decent run in March 2010 but it came to an end there. A very disjointed display allowed Cheshunt to come back from a goal down to claim the three points. Adam Wallace opened the scoring before slack defending allowed our hosts to hit back. Both sides hit the woodwork as well so there could have been more goals. It was another game for Town supporters to play "Spot the Former Towner" as Cheshunt featured Boniek Forbes, Matt Thomson and Steven Velandia. 249 were there.

Enfield Town vs Enfield (1893) – postponed
Middlesex Senior Charity Cup 1st Round

Not surprisingly, tonight's Middlesex Charity Cup game has been postponed.

22nd December 2010

Enfield Town vs Enfield (1893)
Middlesex Senior Charity Cup 1st Round

This game is subject to a pitch inspection.

Tomorrow evening we are due to face the Borough's newest senior club in the Middlesex Charity Cup. If the game goes ahead, kick off will be 7.45pm. Enfield (1893) were formed in 2007 and did not start playing home games in the London Borough of Enfield until they became our tenants at the beginning of this season. We have never played them before.

The Flickr tags for tomorrow's game, if it goes ahead, will be:

Enfield Town vs Romford – postponed
Ryman League Division One North

Ho, hum. Here we go again. The game is off as the pitch is frozen following the snow we have had over the last couple of days. New date to be advised when I get it.

If you have e-mailed us recently and have not received a reply, please accept my apologies. A rather zealous spam filter has quarantined a large number of my messages (not just football stuff) and I am just starting to go through them. Sorry about that.

Enfield Town vs Romford
Ryman League Division One North

There will be a pitch inspection tomorrow morning at 9.30. It doesn't look good, though, following the snow we had yesterday and today. The weather forecast for the next 24 hours shows that the temperature is not expected to get above freezing. The Met Office have issued a severe weather warning for London and the South East for tomorrow. Great!

Our first ever win came in an away game against Romford in a pre season fixture. It was our forth game. Jim Chandler was beginning to settle on his squad- and the football was beginning to flow. Nicky Morgan gave us an early lead and although Romford equalised two late goals from Daniel Clarke gave us a deserved win.

In August 2002 a below full strength side travelled to the old Ford United ground for an ESL game and came away with a 2-0 win which kept us at the top in the early part of the season. Graeme Hall scored his third goal in as many games and Stuart Snowden scored the second from the penalty spot. 250 watched this one.

The return game, in February 2003, was a much tighter but still hugely entertaining affair for the 250 present. Kevin Riley gave us the lead but Romford deserved their equaliser and a draw was just about right.

We travelled in August 2003 for another entertaining draw. 2-2 this time. Somehow goalless at half time Romford opened the scoring after 70 minutes. Simon Miller opened his ETFC account after 75 minutes and Matthew Negus put us in front after 83. We could not hold the lead and Romford came back to deservedly equalise just 2 minutes later. Even then both sides had further chances to win it. 182 saw this cracker.

The return game in November was a bit of a disaster really. We never got going, our passing was dreadful and we found ourselves at 0-2 just past the ½ hour. Billy Cove pulled one back with 20 minutes to go and we waited for the surge. It never came and Romford probably had the better chances. Whatever, this was our second loss of the season and was a thoroughly deserved win from our visitors.

Romford came to us in August 04 for our second home league game of the season and the home crowd expected flowing football after our recent performances. They didn't get it as we struggled to put passes together against a side that suffered from the handicap of having a man sent off after only 22 minutes. Still the ability to 'win ugly' is the hall-mark of a good side and thanks to a Bradley Brotherton effort we ground out a 1-0 win. We left it late, however, as there was only 2 minutes on the clock when he scored. (Att: 239). The away game, in November, was a physical, sometimes over physical, game with a spate of bookings. Dean Nyman gave us the lead only for us to be pegged back before a Rudi Hall penalty restored the lead. A brace from Lee Smith made it 4-1 and confirmed an outstanding win for the boys and brought us ever closer to Waltham Abbey at the top of the table. Incidently Romford's goal ended a club record of 546 minutes without conceding a goal! The attendance was 215.

Funnily enough we found ourselves with the opportunity of setting another record for not conceding a goal in the League Cup tie first leg. There was to be no denying us this time as we ground out a 1-0 win. That meant we had gone 6 games/632 minutes since conceding. The game was ugly and just like the earlier away game! Two players were sent off. Rudi Hall was ours after taking the free kick which Lee Smith headed home for the only goal. 227 were there. Regrettably, it turned out that Romford fielded a cup tied player in that game amd we were awarded the tie.

It was 2009-10 before our paths crossed again when Romford came up to join us in the Isthmian League. They came to us in October and a goal in each half from Man of the Match Stuart Blackburne saw Town take the three points and move five places up the table to sixth. Romford had lost their trophy tie very heavuily the previous weekend but thry never looked like a side which had shipped seven goals! Town didn't start too cleverly either, not really playing a good passing game until Romford's Remi Nelson got sent off when he picked up two yellow cards in a matter of minutes. Romford hit the bar with the score at 0-0 and certainly played their part in a close first half. 201 saw us win.

We travelled for the return game in March 2010 and it was a cracking game played out in front of 150. Town bagged all three points with a 3-2 win although some poor defending had visiting hearts in mouths as Romford first led and then brought the game back to 2-2. Richard Morton headed the equaliser, while two from Stuart Blackburne secured the win

16th December 2010

Enfield Town Res 2 Thurrock Res 1
Capital League Central Division

We finally saw some football at Goldsdown Road last night as goals from Izci Eren and Bryan Hammatt saw off Thurrock's reserve side. Our visitors were lucky to finish with 11 men after a horrendous over the top, studs up challenge on Bryan Hammatt. Fortunately Bryan had lifted his foot from the floor when he got hit above the ankle. Otherwise he would have left the pitch with a broken leg!

Photos from the game are now, or may shortly be, on Flickr.

Quote of the Day!

The following quote is from today's Prime Minister's Questions…

"Mr David Lammy (Tottenham) (Lab): The Prime Minister will be aware that there are two great football clubs in north London, Tottenham Hotspur and Enfield Town. He will also be aware that Spurs are considering moving across London to the east end—to the Olympic park. Will he join me, and the Spurs fans who signed a petition entitled "Say NO to 'Stratford Hotspur'", in urging the Spurs chairman to put the club and its history before shareholder value?"

Many thanks Mr Lammy!

Waltham Forest 2 Enfield Town 3
Ryman League Division One North

Yesterday we saw a phenomenal Enfield comeback from two goals down with five minutes to go. The first half was all Enfield but Dan Forward hit the post twice and it was 0-0 at half time. Jon Stevenson, on his comeback to the club, was given a straight red card on the hour for a challenge when he clearly got the ball—somehow Forest were not also reduced to ten men for an appalling challenge later in the game. Then Forest took the lead with a cross which eluded Rob Blackburne and went straight in. Their second followed a foul on Craig McKay by former Towner Daniel Francis who then scored.

The comeback started when another former Towner, 'keeper Jason Willis, fouled Adam Wallace and was quite rightly booked (he didn't deny a clear goalscoring opportunity so a red card would have been very harsh). Liam Hope scored the penalty on 86 minutes. Adam Wallace headed in the equaliser three minutes later. Walid Matata won the game with a contender for goal of the season as he sprinted into the area to get on the end of a pass by Adam Wallace.

Waltham Forest were left with an injury worry after Joseph Ellul's studs got stuck in the pitch as he tried to tackle Walid Matata and he was left with a suspected broken leg.

Photos from the game are now, or may shortly be, on Flickr. REPORT to follow.

Brentwood Town vs Enfield Town – postponed
Ryman League Division One North

Tuesday's scheduled game at the Brentwood Centre has been postponed and will now take place on Tuesday 8th February, kick off 7.45pm. Brentwood are due to play an Essex Senior Cup tie at home to Great Wakering Rovers which has been rearranged for Tuesday evening and takes precedence over our league match.

Waltham Forest vs Enfield Town
Ryman League Division One North

Despite the optimistic tone of the preview of tomorrow's match on Waltham Forest's own web site, there will be an "early pitch inspection" before we know whether we will be playing or not. If the game goes ahead it may be Waltham Forest's last game at Cricklefield Stadium before they return to Wadham Lodge. While Forest are bottom of the table, 14 points behind us and while we do have four games in hand over them and a goal difference which is 33 goals better than theirs, we are bottom of the form table for the last six games having gained only one point to their four over that period. Our away form has been a lot better than our home form though, so hopefully we can use that to kick start a league revival! All being well, kick off will be 3.00pm.

Our home game, in September 05, was moved to a Friday evening and an impressive gate of 387 turned up to watch. The first half was even and could have gone either way but Town started to put the visitors under pressure in the second period. Dean Green was eventually pulled to the ground after 70 minutes and Rudi Hall confidently put away the spot kick. Forest came back at us and it took an injury time goal from Dean Nyman (who scored from a ridiculous angle) to secure all three points. The return game, in February, was a physical encounter in which Forest had four booked, we had three. They had two players sent off late in the game as well. The game finished very late as they had a player stretched off and then Kojo Ofori had to be taken to hospital with concussion. Anyway we ended a dreadful period (five games without a win) thanks to a goal after 76 minutes from Rudi Hall. 165 were there as yet another club had their best attendance of the season with us paying them a visit.

187 saw us lose 0-2 in our visit to Forest for the Isthmian League game in November 2006. Frankly we didn't play in this game. Very few chances were created and we squandered the best of those when Dean Nyman missed from the spot when we were a goal down. A late second settled the tie. It was their turn to miss a penalty in the home game of January 2007. To be honest neither side deserved to win this torrid affair in which six players were booked and two sent off. Kevin Stephens was ours. 268 witnessed the "fun".

We came home with all 3 points from our away game in January 2008 after a comfortable 2-0 win. To be honest we were rarely threatened and Michael Deane scored his first goals for the club – both from fairly close range. Both sides had a player sent off for violent conduct. Kofi Nyamah was ours as our disciplinary hall of shame got even worse! 138 were there. The return game finished up our appalling home form for 2007-08. Fresh from wins at Arlesey and AFC Sudbury we proceeded to lose 3-0! Forest deserved their win that's for sure but we were awful. And as for our disciplinary record – Glenn Harvey walked for a professional foul and Andy Jones followed him in the last minute for a second yellow (having a go at the ref!) 207 saw our mind numbing performance.

Our away performance in October 2008 was anything but mind numbing. After a tentative start we cruised into a 2-0 half time lead. By the end it was 6-0 and was up there with our 8-2 demolition of the Abbey and the 7-0 win over Ilford. It also followed on from our 5-1 away win at Godalming. We had six different scorers – another first and was our 4th win on the trot. Keeping up the stats it was our first clean sheet of the season. 125 saw the fun and we went up to 14th. The goalscorers were Messrs Hall, Deane, Tickner, Stevenson, Remy and Dauti. The reverse fixture, in February 09, was absolutely dreadful from our point of view. One of our worse ever performances saw us lose 1-0. Totally lacking in cohesion we managed to bore the pants off the 196 who were there.

The home game in December 2009 was played on afreezing cold night and our lowest home league gate of 136 saw us win 4-2 and go 3rd. Cruising at 4-0 we let them in with two goals in a minute late in the game. Sam Byfield with 2, a Rudi Hall penalty and one from mom Adam Wallace were our scorers. The away game was in April 2010 and the team finished the away programme with an emphatic win at Cricklefields. All the goals came in the second half as Mark Kirby got the first, Richard Morton scored a brace and Paul Marks finished things off after a Stuart Blackburne header was saved by former Town 'keeper Jason Willis. Strangely enough all our goals were scored from within the six yard box from a total of, perhaps, ten yards! 107 were there.

Town travelled for an FA Cup preliminary round in August 2010 and eased through to the 1st qualifying round. The score remained 0-0 at half time thanks in no small part to former Towner Jason Willis in the home goal and the crossbar which denied Richard Morton. The goals all came in a ten minute spell in the second half with Lee Protheroe opening the scoring from the penalty spot after Sam Byfield was brought down, Richard Morton finishing off a great move down the right by Deniz Mehmet and Michael Bardle, and Sam Byfield whose goal from the edge of the area was set up by Adam Wallace. Wallace also had a goal disallowed for offside. 119 were there.
