It was a case of end of season hangover for Town as they failed to find the form necessary to pull off a league and league cup double, going down 4-1 to neighbours Waltham Abbey on a hot, and at times heated Essex afternoon.
In a relatively uneventful first half both sides played out a fairly cagey game which neither seemed able to unlock. First blood went to Abbey, with a scrambled goal from Holland after Town failed to clear a headed effort successfully. It was enough to wake up the Town attack and they could have equalised from a Riley shot which was cleared off the line, claims it had gone in being dismissed by the referee.
Town eventually equalised early in the second half when Lee Smith latched onto a through ball to fire it across the face of the goal beating John Hickman. The introduction of Matt Negus at half time had livened up the Town attack and they were playing with more purpose now. In the 60th minute Rudi Hall forced Hickman into a fine save, but it was against the run of play that Abbey's second came. Power went on a god run and caught the Town defence napping. Baldwin did well to recover but the loose ball fell to Emett who snapped up the loose ball to restore Abbey's lead.
With Town now becoming increasingly frustrated by some decisions, they started to lose focus and Abbey were getting more into the game. The introduction of Pamplin paid immediate dividends when he had two quick chances, but also picked up a needless booking. With Town chasing the game, gaps were appearing at the back and five minutes from time Andy Hall had to come a long way to clear a through ball and was beaten on the right. In a desperate action to clear from the unguarded net the ball was forced behind, but when the dust had settled, referee Whitton pointed at the spot and Graeme Hall was shown the red card. White stepped up to slot home the spot kick to extend Abbey's lead. With the game running out of control, rash challenges were exchanged on both sides, and it was in injury time that Burbridge added the fourth, putting paid to any double hopes that Town had entertained.
