(Gordon Brasted Memorial Trophy Semi Final 1st Leg) Saturday 1st March 2003
Ilford 0 Match details by Peter Coath, Enfield Town FC Press Officer This semi-final goes into the second leg evenly balanced after ten-man Ilford frustrated Enfield Town this afternoon. The two teams had cancelled each other out for 25 minutes, with both keepers having little to deal with, until a mass brawl started on 25 minutes following a foul on Graeme Hall by CJ Emmanuel. With order soon restored, the Referee showed the red card to the Ilford striker for kicking out at the Town defender while he was down. Town then lost Adam Gant through injury on 33 minutes with Daniel Alleyne taking his place. The game soon settled into a predictable pattern, with Enfield Town trying to find a way past a massed defence while having to deal with the occasional counter-attack. Real goal chances were few and far between although both sides started the second half with a flurry of activity, Malcolm Danni firing over for Ilford and Daniel Clarke firing straight into the arms of Ilford 'keeper Paul Daley. The closest anyone came to a goal all afternoon was on 72 minutes when Ilford scrambled the ball into the box only for Graeme Hall to produce a routine goal-line clearance. Enfield Town's best effort came in stoppage time when second half substitute John Everritt saw his shot deflected into the side netting for a corner. In between those two incidents was plenty of endeavour from both sides but very little excitement for the crowd. The incident that perhaps best summed up the second half came on 82 minutes when Ilford substitute Asa Pamplin, in his first moment of action, ran straight into Andy Hall when contesting a short back pass, knocking the Town 'keeper flying as a result. It wasn't a pretty game to watch but, as Town manager Jim Chandler said afterwards, "It's only half time in this tie". Chandler went on to comment that Ilford put men behind the ball in numbers and despite dominating the first half Town were frustrated by their opponents after the interval. Ilford: Daley, Milton (Simbon 49), Ballard, March, Jones, Nicholls, Durrant, Danni (Pamplin 80), Stevens (O'Reilly 61), Emmanuel, Sango. Sent off; Emmanuel. Enfield Town: A Hall, Allen, Negus (T Morgan 45), Gant (Alleyne 33), G Hall, Snowden, Riley, Quinn, Clarke, Turner, M St Hilaire (Everritt 75). (Middlesex Senior Cup Semi Final) Tuesday 4th March 2003 Harrow Borough (1) 1 Lopez 18 Match details by Peter Coath, Enfield Town FC Press Officer The Enfield Town cup reputation lives on after this thrilling victory over Ryman Premier opposition at Earlsmead tonight. Both teams tried to play a controlled passing game and despite a wet and slippery surface they managed between them to produce a highly entertaining match. Town wasted no time in finding their way through the home defence, Daniel Clarke racing down the left on 8 minutes to cross for Daniel Alleyne who chested the ball down before burying his shot beyond the reach of Keita Karamoko. David Allen and Martin St Hilaire made unsuccessful forays into the Borough box before Clarke poached the second on 17 minutes, pouncing on a short back-pass and tucking the ball under the 'keeper. Borough pulled one back straight away though, when Clemente Lopez drilled a low shot beyond Andy Hall. Town pressed forward for a third goal, with Clarke and Riley interchanging passes on 20 minutes only to be stopped by an offside decision. Riley then failed to get a touch to a Clarke cross on 29 minutes with Alleyne's control letting him down on 32 minutes after St Hilaire had split the defence with a long pass. Borough kept plugging away for an equaliser but Ross Fitzsimon had a shot charged down before Andy Hall saved superbly from Richard Goddard on 35 minutes. Hall made another superb save on 42 minutes to deny Goddard again while St Hilaire went agonisingly close in first half stoppage time when his shot curled beyond the far post. David Allen had the first real chance of the second half, Karamoko tipping his lofted shot over the bar on 56 minutes. The Borough 'keeper then denied Clarke on 65 minutes when he pushed his shot onto the bar, John Everritt being beaten to the rebound in front of an open goal. Borough looked to have grabbed an equaliser through the head of Goddard on 69 minutes but Hall pushed the ball onto the post with Bradley Brotherton on hand to effect a goal-line clearance. With Borough now pressing forward in numbers Town opted to use the pace of Clarke as an outlet and the closing stages of the game saw a thrilling end-to-end battle. Clarke's cross on 85 minutes caused an almighty scramble in the goal-mouth with Mathew Negus and St Hilaire both having a stab at the ball before it was hacked clear. Town replaced St Hilaire with Tommy Morgan on 90 minutes and the substitute's undeniable ball skills helped Town safely see out the remainder of the game. Harrow Borough: Karamoko, Watson, Henry (Yhdego 60), Clarke, Everitt, Marney, Walters, Fitzsimon, Lopez (Valenti 55), Haule (Gavin 73), Goddard. Unused subs; Dyer, Symes. Enfield Town: A Hall, Allen, Negus, Baldwin (Everritt 45), Brotherton, Snowden, Alleyne, Quinn, Clarke, Riley, M St Hilaire (T Morgan 90). Unused subs; Carr, Gant, Jackman. (Essex Senior League) Saturday 8th March 2003 Enfield Town (0) 1 Clarke 46 Match details by Peter Coath, Enfield Town FC Press Officer A catalogue of missed chances cost Enfield Town dear this afternoon as they once again fell to defeat against Concord Rangers. The visitors went ahead on 13 minutes through Lee Guiver, who side footed past Andy Hall from the edge of the box. The visitors were good value for their lead but Town soon started to threaten. A good run and cross by David Allen lead to Daniel Alleyne blasting the ball over from close range on 19 minutes but it was from a succession of corner kicks where the visitors looked most vulnerable. A Matt Negus corner on 20 minutes saw Bradley Brotherton and Daniel Clarke both go close in a scramble for the ball while Martin St Hilaire got in a free header from another corner on 21 minutes but the ball sailed wide. The Concord defence scrambled the next corner to safety on 22 minutes and had to do the same from the following corner to deny Brotherton. Daniel Clarke thought he had equalised on 32 minutes but the goal was ruled out after the Referee deemed that Clarke had controlled the ball with his arm. Concord survived another scare on the stroke of half time when Paul Sammons headed a St Hilaire cross against his own bar with Allen only able to hit the rebound into the side netting. Town began the second half at a canter and Clarke equalised on 46 minutes when he robbed a dithering defence on the edge of the area and strode forward to easily beat Dale Brightly. Alleyne went close on 47 minutes, although credit must be given to Sammons for getting in his tackle when it counted. Brad Quinn drifted in unmarked to head on a Paul Turner free kick on 48 minutes but the defence cleared the danger. Quinn then headed over from a Negus corner before Brightly had a lucky escape on 51 minutes, Clarke pouncing on a sliced clearance from the Concord 'keeper but being tackled just before he could get his shot in. A seemingly harmless tussle between Brotherton and Guiver threatened to boil over into a mass brawl on 58 minutes but Referee Chris Lee soon restored order and let both players go with just a warning. Stuart Snowden tried his luck direct from a free kick on 63 minutes but was unable to get his shot on target. Daniel Clarke broke free on 67 minutes but his left footed shot rolled wide. Concord, having rode the storm, started to make some chances of their own now and they went close from a free kick on 69 minutes before forcing Andy Hall into action again a minute later. Town were still threatening though and Clarke hit the side netting from an Alleyne pass on 76 minutes with Quinn shooting wide a minute later. Town then had a lucky let off when Wastell's shot from long range smacked off a post with Hall beaten, but they were about to pay the penalty for not converting their earlier chances. Graeme Hall was adjudged to have fouled on 85 minutes and from the free kick the ball was rolled to Craig Etherington who scored with a fierce shot. Town fought back well but David Allen headed across an open goal on 87 minutes before Clarke shot against a post with the Concord defence screaming for offside. A Tommy Morgan free kick deep into stoppage time caused the visitors defence more consternation but Town were unable to get to in a decent shot. Enfield Town: A Hall, Allen, Negus, Brotherton, G Hall, Snowden, Alleyne, Quinn, Clarke, Turner, M St Hilaire (T Morgan 64). Unused subs; Baldwin, Carr. Booked; Turner, G Hall. Concord Rangers: Brightly, Brown, Sammons, Wastell, Reese, Walsh, Guiver, Etherington, Greaves, Gooden, Hawthorn (Hodges 72). Unused subs; Ware, Goodwin. Booked; Brown, Gooden, Wastell. (Essex Senior League) Saturday 15th March 2003 Bowers United (0) 0 Match details by Peter Coath, Enfield Town FC Press Officer A last minute goal from Daniel Clarke wrapped up the three points for Enfield Town this afternoon. Bowers had the benefit of a strong wind behind them in the first half and for a while they made life difficult for their opponents. Town struggled to create any chances at first but they squandered a golden chance on 18 minutes when the industrious John Everritt blasted over from inside the six yard box after Daniel Alleyne's shot bobbled beyond the stranded Wickens. Andy Hall was the busier keeper in the first half, making fine saves when Bowers threatened, but he was put under pressure by his own defence on 35 minutes and had to rush his clearance when a Stuart Snowden back-pass fell well short. Town took over in the second half, playing some fine passing football, and they gave notice of their intentions on 49 minutes when a Matt Negus cross nearly bounced in at the far post. Paul Turner then practised his shooting, blazing high over the target on 52 minutes before hitting a shot squarely against the bar a minute later. Daniel Clarke was a constant problem to the Bowers defence and he nearly worked an opening for himself on 55 minutes when he tricked his way past three defenders on the edge of the area before being tackled for a corner. Town's new signing Alin Crisanov had replaced Bradley Brotherton by now and he showed plenty of promise with some fine ball control and distribution. It wasn't all one way traffic though, as Andy Hall had to deal with a Bowers breakthrough on the hour mark. Snowden curled a low shot wide on 64 minutes, with Alleyne then shooting wide on 69 minutes after doing well to control a high ball into the area. Crisanov was then denied on 76 minutes when he rescued a wayward corner kick but found the Bowers keeper right on top of him as he turned to shoot. Bowers wasted two good chances in the closing stages, substitute Lee Smith shooting straight at Andy Hall on 78 minutes with the Town keeper making an excellent stop from point blank range on 88 minutes. The decisive goal came on 89 minutes when Clarke was fed by Crisanov and beat one defender on the edge of the area before slotting the ball under the advancing keeper. A goal-line clearance from Stuart Snowden preserved the lead on 90 minutes and after that Town's victory looked safe. Bowers United: Wickens, S Smith, Harris, Golby, Birkett, Doyle (McFadden 77), McGoldrick, Chambers (Parker 63), Warner (L Smith 66), Deakin, Hatch. Booked; Doyle. Enfield Town: A Hall, Allen, Negus, Brotherton (Crisanov 56), Baldwin, Snowden, Everritt (Carr 81), Riley, Clarke, Turner, Alleyne. Unused sub; Genethliou. Booked; Brotherton. Enfield Town (1) 2 Everritt 21; Snowden (pen) 83 Match details by Peter Coath, Enfield Town FC Press Officer Hullbridge Sports couldn't have got off to a worse start tonight, with Luke Slatford breaking a leg barely ten seconds into the match. A lengthy delay ensued while he was stretchered off, Player-Manager Jayson Stephens coming on to replace him. Town went into the lead on 17 minutes when John Everritt ran into the area to take a Matt Negus pass in his stride and shoot beyond the reach of Ian Stanley. Everritt was injured in the process though and Andy Carr eventually came on to replace him on 23 minutes. Chris Baker went close for the visitors on 31 minutes, chipping a shot across the goal after drifting in unmarked at the far post. Town were looking sharper though and Stanley denied Martin St Hilaire on 41 minutes before seeing a header from the same player rebound off the crossbar soon after. Christos Genethliou replaced Daniel Alleyne at half time. The second half was punctuated by several scuffles as players from both sides lost their composure. A booking was inevitable but St Hilaire was the unlucky recipient of the first yellow card after he failed to retreat at a free kick, although this was rather unjust as he was actually being spoken to by the Referee at the time and the free-kick was hit straight at him from close range. Town were forced into a reorganisation on 68 minutes when Adam Gant replaced a rather groggy Graeme Hall. Gant went up front with St Hilaire falling back into midfield. Town's other two substitutes had nearly conspired to grab a goal shortly before that, when Genethliou powered a header towards goal and Carr sneaked in behind the defence to clip the ball against a post. Daniel Clarke had a shot well saved on 77 minutes but the Hullbridge keeper was at fault on 83 minutes when he, and a defender, sandwiched Negus in the area to concede a penalty. Stuart Snowden converted the spot-kick to make the game safe. Clarke had a valid penalty appeal turned down minutes later when he appeared to be pulled back in the area. Negus had the last shot of the match, almost cashing in after Stanley's clearance had rebounded back into the danger area off a defender. At this stage of the season it is the result that really counts and although Town had been rather subdued at times they were still strong enough to overcome a spirited Hullbridge side. Enfield Town: A Hall, Allen, Negus, Quinn, G Hall (Gant 68), Snowden, Alleyene (Genethliou 45), Everritt (Carr 23), Clarke, Riley, M St Hilaire. Booked; M St Hilaire. Hullbridge Sports : Stanley, Pearcey, Papworth, Pullen (Wells 45), Moore, White, Hayes, Webster, Slatford (Stephens 1), Wheeler, Baker. Unused sub; Wellman. Booked; Stephens, White. Enfield Town (0) 1 Snowden (pen) 50 Match details by Peter Coath, Enfield Town FC Press Officer An unconvincing performance was still enough to see Enfield Town safely through this afternoon. Stansted, second from bottom in the table and without a league point for months, put up some spirited resistance but were unable to gain any reward for their efforts. The main talking point of a sterile first half came on 22 minutes when Daniel Clarke beat the offside trap and raced towards goal only to appear to be bought down by Stansted keeper Paul Dennis. After consulting his assistant, the Referee awarded a goal-kick. Town didn't register a worthwhile shot on goal until Brad Quinn went close on 42 minutes, while Stansted could only manage two long-range efforts before Graeme Hall cleared Andy Robinson's effort off the line on 27 minutes. Tommy Morgan replaced Graeme hall at half time, giving Town more attacking options in the second half. With a brisk breeze blowing in their favour, Town pushed forward and Kevin Riley hit the bar on 48 minutes after Stansted had failed to clear their lines. The breakthrough came on 50 minutes when Dale Welch used his hand to control the ball, Stuart Snowden easily converting the resultant penalty. The game opened up a bit now and chances came at both ends. Andy Hall denied Stansted's Ashworth with a superb save on 60 minutes, minutes after Dennis had punched clear to stop David Allen connecting with Morgan's pin-point cross. Town had a scare on 75 minutes when Matt Negus had to clear off the line, while Graham Bennett rescued the visitors in similar circumstances soon after to deny Clarke. Ashworth shot wide on 80 minutes, while Andy Hall had to resort to a full-back style tackle to stop Luis Frota on 82 minutes. Town rather rode their luck after going in front, being unable to kill the game off, while Stansted created plenty of chances themselves but failed to capitalise. Maximum points is all that counts at this stage of the season though and Town achieved just that, albeit unconvincingly. Enfield Town: A Hall, Allen, Negus, Baldwin, G Hall (T Morgan 45), Snowden, Riley, Quinn, Clarke, Turner, M St Hilaire (Ridout 87). Unused sub; Carr.Booked; Snowden, Quinn. Stansted: Dennis, Welch, Mercer (Lowe 83), Bennett, St Louis (Massala 67), Frota, Tagliamonti, Wright (Meadows 75), Ashworth, Robinson, Harvey. Booked; Mercer. (Essex Senior League) Wednesday 26th March 2003 Enfield Town (0) 1 Brotherton 72 Match details by Peter Coath, Enfield Town FC Press Officer Bradley Brotherton hogged the headlines for Enfield Town tonight, going from goal-scoring hero to red-card villain in a display that showed the best and worst of his character. After an even first-half, Sawbridgeworth took the lead on 69 minutes when Goodchild converted a penalty awarded after Graeme Hall had fouled in the area. Jim Chandler brought on Brotherton 2 minutes later and his first involvement in the game came on 72 minutes when he poked the ball home with his first kick of the match after a long throw from David Allen had caused confusion in the area. Brotherton's red card came deep into time added on, when he needlessly elbowed Sawbridgeworth substitute Aken when contesting a loose ball. Enfield Town welcomed back skipper John Ridout to the starting line-up and he put in a good display. Graeme Hall was dominant at the back as ever, while new signing Peter Ulatowski came off the bench in the second half to put in a promising performance. Not to be out-done, Sawbridgeworth introduced new signing Amot and he too impressed. It proved to be a tight game, with both teams evenly matched and unable to penetrate. Daniel Clarke was Enfield Town's main threat, using his pace to get around the defence, while Martin St Hilaire was heavily involved throughout the first half. Sawbridgeworth had their chances throughout but failed to get a clear sight of goal and were restricted to long range efforts. They went close on 26 minutes though when home keeper Andy Hall had to scramble the ball clear following a well-flighted corner. Enfield Town had their best chances in the second half with Brad Quinn, Brotherton and Ulatowski all going close with headers. A draw was a fair result in the end, although for Enfield Town it only keeps them one point clear of Southend Manor at the top of the table. Enfield Town: A Hall, Allen, Negus, Baldwin, G Hall, Snowden, Riley (Alleyne 64), Ridout (Brotherton 71), Clarke, Quinn, M St Hilaire (Ulatowski 59). Booked; G Hall. Sent-off; Brotherton. Sawbridgeworth Town : Coomber, Wardle, S Martin, Pearcey, Sedgwick, Goodchild, Cook, Amot, A Martin (Brinkman 64), Nixon (Aken 67), Watters. Unused sub; Bulled. Booked; Aken. |
