Contact Fran Cunneen for bookings on 01992 652415 before 10:00pm please or in person at Brimsdown Sports and Social Club on Thursday evening. (Essex Senior League) Saturday 5th April 2003 Southend Manor (0) 1 Ridout (o.g.) 66 Match details by Peter Coath, Enfield Town FC Press Officer It was impossible to separate the league's top two teams this afternoon, after this tense match ended in a draw. Decent goal chances were few and far between, although both sides were getting forward as often as possible. Town looked the more likely to strike earlier on but were restricted to just a few half-chances, Brad Quinn's header on 21 minutes, which went narrowly wide, being the best of the bunch. Southend wasted a good opportunity on 41 minutes when Coleman lifted his shot over from close range. Nothing much changed after the interval. Curtis wasted a good chance for the home side on 51 minutes while Town were still buzzing around the Southend goal and threatening dangerously. The breakthrough came on 61 minutes when Daniel Clarke converted a penalty, given after Martin St Hilaire was unceremoniously dumped to the ground in the area. Town couldn't keep the lead for long though, skipper John Ridout netting an unfortunate own-goal on 66 minutes when trying to clear after Southend finally found a way past goalkeeper Andy Hall. Town had the better of the latter stages, with Clarke, Allen and Alleyne linking up nicely on 75 minutes to provide Quinn with another headed chance that skidded narrowly wide. Graeme Hall got in a free header from a Tommy Morgan corner on 82 minutes but couldn't keep the ball down. Wilson had a late chance to win the game for Southend but his shot drifted high and wide with only the keeper to beat. The championship race stays alive for another few weeks yet. Southend Manor: Green, Smith, King, Rolfe, Nicks, Leek, Curtis, Coleman, Wilson, Jones (Baker 89), Bourne. Unused subs; Manda, Dawson. Booked; Wilson, King. Enfield Town: A Hall, Allen, Negus, Baldwin, G Hall, Snowden (T Morgan 45), Quinn, Ridout (Alleyne 71), Clarke, Turner, M St Hilaire (Riley 71). Booked; G Hall, Allen. (Gordon Brasted Memorial Trophy Semi Final 2nd Leg) Saturday 12th April 2003 Enfield Town (0) 2 Ridout 50, Riley 61 Match details by Peter Coath, Enfield Town FC Press Officer After a dour, goal-less first leg, this tie finally came to life in the second half this afternoon as Enfield Town made it through to the final at the expense of league title rivals Ilford. Town went close early on, when a Matt Negus free-kick skimmed across the face of the goal, but Ilford hit back and Andy Hall had to make a fine save to stop a header from Tim O'Reilly. Another Negus free-kick flashed across an open goal on 11 minutes but Town went closer on 17 minutes when Paul Daley pulled off a flying save to stop a long range effort from Bradley Brotherton. Town had a lucky escape on 25 minutes when both Adam Gant and Matt Negus hit their own crossbar in trying to clear the danger. Graeme Hall then drifted in unmarked at the far post only to head wide of the Ilford goal from a free-kick on 28 minutes. John Ridout replaced the injured David Allen at half time and had an immediate impact on the game. Daniel Clarke outpaced the Ilford defence on 50 minutes and pulled his cross back from the goal line for Ridout to thump home from the edge of the box. Town then committed the cardinal sin of relaxing on their lead and Ilford were level on 52 minutes, Chris Stevens tapping home from close range after Anthony Jones had been allowed to run unchallenged across the pitch to set up the cross. Ridout looked to have doubled his tally on 57 minutes when he lifted the ball over Daley, only to be denied by a spectacular clearance on the line. Town finally regained the lead on 61 minutes when Kevin Riley rammed the ball home from inside the six-yard box after Daley had parried close-range efforts from Martin St Hilaire and Brad Quinn. Daniel Alleyne was then put through by St Hilaire but his shot was blocked by Alan Milton. Town were piling on the pressure now and a Negus effort was deflected for a corner, from which Ridout saw another effort saved on the line. Daniel Clarke then hit the side netting on 74 minutes but Ilford had begun making substitutions by now and had started to get back into the game. Andy Hall raced from his goal to deny Fanibunyan on 78 minutes but the pressure was starting to tell. Ilford won a succession of corners in the last 5 minutes of regulation time, going close on at least two occasions, while Town's attempts to fight back ended in offside decisions. 5 minutes of stoppage time saw Ilford gain more corners but the defence held firm to book a trip to Burnham for the final next Saturday. Enfield Town: A Hall, Allen (Ridout 45), Negus, Gant, G Hall, Quinn, Alleyne, Brotherton, Clarke, Riley, M St Hilaire. Unused subs; T Morgan, Snowden. Ilford: Daley, Milton, Ballard, March, Danni, Nichols (Fanibuyan 66) , Stevens, Hammick (Sango 86), O'Reilly, Pamplin (B Jones), A Jones. Booked; O'Reilly. (Essex Senior League) Tuesday 15th April 2003 Enfield Town (1) 2 Brotherton 42; Quinn 49 Match details by Peter Coath, Enfield Town FC Press Officer Enfield Town regained top-spot in the table tonight after overcoming some spirited resistance from Bowers United. The Enfield Town players applauded their opponents on to the pitch before the game, as a gesture of thanks for the sporting way in which Bowers dealt with the abandonment of the original fixture in November when an Enfield Town supporter died at the side of the pitch. The goodwill between the two teams slowly evaporated throughout the evening however, ending with insults being traded as the teams made their way back to the changing rooms after an ill-disciplined second half. Town manager Jim Chandler made a few changes to his starting line-up, no doubt with two forthcoming cup-finals in mind, and Town took a while to get going. Peter Ulatowski went close on 15 minutes when he dived in to head John Ridout's cross over the bar. Bowers went close themselves soon after but goal chances were at a premium. The visitors took the lead on 36 minutes when the lively Lee Smith connected with a corner at the far post and headed downwards for Simon Deakin to poke the ball home after a goal-mouth scramble. Town responded quickly and from a short corner on 41 minutes Daniel Clarke crossed for Bradley Brotherton to stab the ball home from close range. Brad Quinn put Town in front on 49 minutes, rising to head home after Clarke had beat the offside trap and sent in an accurate cross. The Bowers bench were incensed at the lack of an offside flag and it was from this point on that the game started to turn sour. Town 'keeper Andy Hall was caught late by Lee Smith on 59 minutes, although it did seem to be an accidental collision. Quinn was then spoken to on 64 minutes for his involvement in a minor scuffle after Brotherton had been penalised for a foul. There was some football being played in between these incidents though and Lee Smith was narrowly beaten to a cross on 73 minutes when he looked likely to score. David Allen was then clattered to the ground on 81 minutes with the Referee rather curiously restarting the game with a drop-ball. Peter Ulatowski broke clear on 83 minutes but Trevor Wickens produced a good save. More confusion came on 85 minutes when a Bowers player appeared to be caught by a late tackle, with Brad Quinn being cautioned, only for Town to be awarded a free-kick. It all came to a head deep into stoppage time when Mathew Negus was crudely fouled on the edge of the Bowers box, causing a mass brawl to break out and the entire Bowers bench ending up on the pitch. Quinn received his second booking after some considerable delay but by now both the home supporters and away bench had lost patience with each other, resulting in a rather unsavoury end to the game. The three points put Enfield Town back on top of the table on goal-difference, with two cup-finals and three crucial league games still to come in a hectic ten-day period. Enfield Town: A Hall, Baldwin, Negus, Brotherton, G Hall (Allen 45), T Morgan (M St Hilaire 58), Quinn, Ridout, Clarke, Riley, Ulatowski (Alleyne 85). Sent Off; Quinn (two bookings). Bowers United: Wickens, Marron, Parker, Golby, Birkett, Palmer, Warner, Sims (S Smith 29), L Smith, Deakin, McGoldrick. Booked; One player (unknown). Enfield Town (0) 1 Clarke 68 Match details by Peter Coath, Enfield Town FC Press Officer After having to withdraw from this competition last season, Enfield Town were determined to do it justice this time around and a solitary goal by Daniel Clarke was enough to clinch the club's fourth trophy since being formed two summer's ago. The game was no classic, although a stiff breeze blowing the length of the pitch did have a something to do with it. Enfield Town played against the wind in the first half but managed to carve out a few good goal chances. Brad Quinn met a Tommy Morgan free kick after only 2 minutes but failed to get in a decent header, whilst Daniel Alleyne and John Ridout both shot over. Saffron Walden worked a good opening on 17 minutes but Martin Parkinson's attempted lob was hit too hard. David Allen gave the crowd something to applaud on 25 minutes when he collected a throw-out from goalkeeper Andy Hall and raced the length of the pitch before shooting narrowly wide. Ben Riches then sparked Saffron Walden's fans into life on 28 minutes when he burst through two tackles only to see the ball roll harmlessly wide of the post. Clarke then tricked his way through the Saffron Walden defence a minute later before crossing for Alleyne who side-footed high over the bar. Clarke had a go himself on 31 minutes but Saffron Walden 'keeper Dave Pledger saved comfortably. Bradley Brotherton rose high to meet a Morgan corner on 35 minutes but his header was blocked. Enfield Town made a strong start to the second half, with Morgan being most influential down the left. Ridout headed over from a Morgan corner on 46 minutes but Saffron Walden nearly scored a crazy own goal on 51 minutes when Cliff Salmon had to clear off his own line after Martin King had got in the way of his own 'keeper's clearance and seen the ball rebound towards an open goal. The pressure was starting to mount now and Allen headed over from a Morgan cross on 55 minutes with Alleyne seeing his shot saved at close range on 58 minutes. Pledger pulled off a fine save on the hour to deny Allen but had to rely on some good fortune from the resultant corner when Ridout headed against the bar. A double substitution saw Ridout and Morgan replaced on 62 minutes by Paul Turner and Martin St Hilaire. The breakthrough came on 68 minutes when Daniel Clarke beat the offside trap on the half-way line and raced unchallenged towards Pledger before beating him with a low shot from inside the area. Quinn headed wide from a Matt Negus corner on 70 minutes but Saffron Walden were now in search of an equaliser and Steve Jackson went the closest on 73 minutes when his wind-assisted cross bounced off the top of Andy Hall's crossbar. Enfield Town held firm, despite conceding a succession of corners in the last 10 minutes. So, with the Gordon Brasted Memorial Trophy now in their grasp, Enfield Town travel to Northwood on Monday to contest the Middlesex Senior Cup against Ryman Premier Hendon in the second-leg of their Easter Cup Final parade. Enfield Town: A Hall, Allen, Negus, Gant, Brotherton, T Morgan (Turner 62), Alleyne, Ridout (M St Hilaire 62), Clarke, Quinn, Riley. Unused sub; Snowden. Booked; Quinn. Saffron Walden Town : Pledger, Wardley, Butchart, Salmon, King, S Barker, M Barker (Britt 75), Parkinson (Das 75), Riches, Anderson, Jackson. Unused sub; Kerr. Booked; Salmon. Enfield Town (0) 0 Match details by Peter Coath, Enfield Town FC Press Officer It was a step too far for Enfield Town tonight as they were overwhelmed by their Ryman Premier Division opponents in the County Cup Final. Town had a few good moments in the first half but two fine headed goals left them with a mountain to climb. Hendon threatened as early as the first minute while Town were still finding their feet, but an easy chance went begging. Town worked their way forward on 8 minutes and Martin St Hilaire won a corner, from which Brad Quinn headed narrowly wide from some distance. St Hilaire won another corner on 12 minutes, Matt Negus playing it short to David Allen whose crossed caused Hendon some consternation before they cleared their lines. Hendon took the lead on 19 minutes, with a hint of good fortune, when Crace found himself free inside the area to head home after a deflected shot had ballooned into the air. Ofori went close on 21 minutes but Town were still creating chances and John Ridout and David Allen combined to send Daniel Clarke free on 24 minutes only for the Town marksman to fire wide. Town had a lucky escape on the half hour when 'keeper Andy Hall miss-hit a clearance but Hendon could not convert the chance. Ofori headed Hendon's second goal on 35 minutes, getting in front of his marker at a free-kick and powering a header across the goal and in at the far post. There was still some fight left in Enfield Town and Graeme hall hit the side netting with a free header after drifting in unmarked at the far post to connect with a Negus free kick. It was to be the giant defender's last contribution to the game as he, and Paul Turner, were replaced at half time by Tommy Morgan and Steve Baldwin. It was a morale-sapping second half for Town, with Hendon first to every loose ball and getting forward in numbers whenever the chance arose. In contrast, Town had little success when pressing forward. St Hilaire had a half-chance on 48 minutes but pushed the ball too far when trying to round the defence. Andy Hall then made a fine save as Hendon countered quickly. Bradley Brotherton was fighting a one-man battle with Ofori now, and the Hendon striker found the Town defender to be a formidable opponent, so much so that he was eventually booked for dissent after being given offside instead of getting the free-kick that he thought he deserved. Hendon had seen a possible third goal disallowed for offside on 55 minutes, while they thought they had scored on 78 minutes but Andy Hall safely held the rebound after a header had hit the bar. Daniel Clarke was booked for dissent on 83 minutes as Town, despite the midfield prompting of skipper John Ridout, became increasingly frustrated. 5 minutes of added time brought no change in Town's fortunes and Hendon safely saw the game out to clinch the Cup. Enfield Town: A Hall, Allen, Negus, Gant (Riley 63), G Hall (Baldwin 45), Quinn, Brotherton, Ridout, Clarke, Turner (T Morgan 45), M St Hilaire. Unused subs; Alleyne, Carr. Hendon: Hook, Burgess, Hollingdale, Towler, Cooper, Butler, Ofori, Bates, Crace, Yates, Binns. Subs; Alves, Randall, Duncan, McCann, Endersby. (Essex Senior League) Thursday 24th April 2003 Eton Manor (0) 1 Knapman (pen) 59 Match details by Peter Coath, Enfield Town FC Press Officer A storming start to the match saw Enfield Town completely knock Eton Manor out of their stride this evening and reclaim top spot in the league. John Ridout got the party going after only 2 minutes when he followed up to tap the ball home from less than a yard out after Neale had parried Peter Ulatowski's effort. Ulatowski made it two-nil on 5 minutes when he drifted in unmarked to convert a Matthew Negus cross but any hopes of a goal avalanche were thwarted as Eton Manor finally gained some composure. Neale was the busier of the two goalkeepers though and he produced a splendid save to deny Daniel Clarke on 31 minutes. Ruocco went close for Manor on 35 minutes, Andy Hall saving at the second attempt, while Manor went closer on 44 minutes when Hall saved a header at point-blank range. Eton Manor collapsed during first half stoppage time however, with Ulatowski burying a shot into the roof of the net from eighteen yards after Daniel Alleyne had set him up, and then completing his hat-trick with a low shot 2 minutes later after Tommy Morgan's driven cross rebounded to him off a defender. Andy Carr replaced Matt Negus at half-time and he soon got involved, sending over a dangerous cross that Kevin Riley just failed to convert. It was a disjointed showing from Town after the interval though and they paid the price when Brad Quinn gave away a penalty on 59 minutes from which Knapman scored. Town then squandered a penalty themselves on 73 minutes, Clarke's effort being well parried by the impressive Neale. Carr set Riley up for another chance on 77 minutes but his near-post header was blocked. Neale made his best save of the night on 82 minutes to deny Ulatowski, while he had to be quick to save at Clarke's feet in stoppage time as the Town marksman bore down on goal. Eton Manor: Neale, Lee, Marks (Buck 55), Young, Sale, Littlechild, Sunshine (Stevenson 56), Duff, Knapman, Jay, Ruocco. Unused sub; Crawley. Enfield Town: A Hall, Negus (Carr 45), Riley, Gant (T Morgan 32), Brotherton, Baldwin, Alleyne, Ridout (M St Hilaire 37), Clarke, Quinn, Ulatowski. (Essex Senior League) Saturday 26th April 2003
Enfield Town (0) 1 Negus 70 Match details by Peter Coath, Enfield Town FC Press Officer It was a tense and scrappy encounter at Goldsdown Road this afternoon but results elsewhere meant that Enfield Town, courtesy of a Mathew Negus goal on 70 minutes, had clinched the Foresters Essex Senior League championship only two years after being formed. Scrappy though the game may have been, Town were rarely threatened as they dominated proceedings from the kick-off. Kevin Riley burst into the box on 6 minutes but Bench saved his shot well. Negus then headed over from a Paul Turner cross on 14 minutes while Daniel Clarke shot wide on 16 minutes. Clarke and Peter Ulatowski were forming a useful partnership up front and Ulatowski was just beaten to a Clarke cross on 19 minutes as Town went close again. Bradley Brotherton then rattled the crossbar with a header, after ghosting in unmarked at the far post to meet a Negus corner. Andy Hall had his first worthwhile piece of action on 31 minutes when he safely held a hopeful punt into the area despite being fouled in the process. Ulatowski had a header well saved by Bench on 39 minutes and from the resultant corner Brad Quinn popped up at the far post but couldn't get his shot on target. Clarke went on a probing run in first half stoppage time but shot narrowly wide. Still the chances came Town's way and Paul Turner headed over before the Referee finally blew the half-time whistle. The second half started with a flurry of bookings but after a silly brawl between Mike Hunt and Bradley Brotherton on 50 minutes things calmed down again. Town were still struggling to gain any fluency but Clarke put some life back into the game on 54 minutes when he surged past five defenders before sending a shot whizzing across the face of the goal. Quinn had a header saved soon afterwards but the deadlock was finally broken after Town had made a double substitution. Martin St Hilaire sent in a looping cross that Bench clawed away from goal, only for Matt Negus to sneak in unmarked at the far post to blast the ball into the roof of the net. Steve Baldwin pressed forward on 73 minutes but after St Hilaire had sent him clear with a cheeky back-heel he failed to get his cross past the first defender. Clarke then went on another of his devastating runs along the goal-line only for his cross to be cleared. Negus gave Bench some problems on 86 minutes but the Burnham keeper pulled off a fine save to deny him a second goal. Ulatowski was then tackled rather crudely on the edge of the box but the defender was given the benefit of the doubt. 6 minutes of stoppage time saw Town hang on to their win, with the supporters, all 329 of them, then waiting for word on the final score from Southend Manor before erupting into joyful scenes of celebration. Still only two years old, Enfield Town can add the League Championship to their ever-growing list of honours. Enfield Town: A Hall, Allen, Negus, Baldwin, Brotherton, T Morgan (M St Hilaire 65), Riley, Quinn, Clarke, Turner (Alleyne 65), Ulatowski. Unused sub; Everitt. Booked; Brotherton. Burnham Ramblers: Bench, Hull, Pain (D Higley 81), Smith, McCarthy, Kennett, J Higley, Hunt, Renshaw, Hallmark (Ketland 78), Harrison. Unused sub; Easton. Booked; Hull, Renshaw, Hunt. (Essex Senior League) Monday 28th April 2003 Ilford (0) 0 Match details by Peter Coath, Enfield Town FC Press Officer With the Championship already claimed and playing free from pressure, Enfield Town produced a masterful performance tonight to round off their second-ever season in fine style. Ilford started as if they meant business and it took a double save from Andy Hall and some superb mopping-up from Mathew Negus to stop them going ahead on 3 minutes. Ilford went close again a minute later but Town had yet to get started. With John Everitt fast regaining his form and Tommy Morgan starting to produce the goods down the left flank, Town soon got into gear and Morgan, released by Martin St Hilaire's long pass, fed Daniel Clarke who saw his shot saved at the foot of the post. Clarke, captain for the day in honour of his 100th appearance for the club, was leading the line well and with the arrival of substitute Peter Ulatowski for the limping John Ridout on 24 minutes Town's supporters got a glimpse of what to expect if the partnership continues into next season. Ulatowski hit his second hat-trick for the club in five days, starting on 26 minutes and finishing just before half-time. His first was a tap-in after Ilford 'keeper Daley could only parry Morgan's shot, while his second was a superb piece of opportunism when he back-heeled the ball past a startled Daley after another Clarke shot has been blocked. Goal number three came shortly before the interval when he slipped in at the far post to convert Morgan's cross, with half of the crowd thinking he had been caught offside and wondering why he was celebrating! Ilford made two changes at the interval and they held firm until the hour mark when Clarke seized his chance to go around Daley and slot the ball into the empty net after being released by Daniel Alleyne. The floodgates suddenly opened in spectacular fashion, with Martin St Hilaire scoring with a sublime chip over the 'keeper from the edge of the box on 65 minutes. Andy Carr replaced Ulatowski on 67 minutes and soon got involved, winning the free-kick from which Bradley Brotherton netted Town's sixth goal on 70 minutes. Alleyne then raced past a static defence to complete the scoring on 72 minutes with a superb shot from inside the area. After that it was just a matter of playing out the remainder of the game before the celebrations could begin when Town skipper John Ridout collected the League Championship trophy from League Chairman Robert Errington. Ilford: Daley, Milton, Ballard, March, Durrant, Danni (B Jones 45), Hammick, Stevens (Nicholls 45), Devor (Pamplin 60), O'Reilly, A Jones. Booked; Hammick. Enfield Town: A Hall, Baldwin, Negus, Quinn (Gant 85), Brotherton, T Morgan, Alleyne, Ridout (Ulatowski 24, Carr 67), Clarke, Everitt, M St Hilaire. |
